Dara Shikuh, Prince, son of Shahjahan -- Biography -- India -- History -- 1526-1767

Dara Shukoh (1615-1659) was the eldest son of Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal emperor. Dara, a Sufi who studied Hindu thought, was the presumed heir to the throne, but he was executed by Aurangzeb, his younger brother, who imposed a strict form of Islam. Aurangzeb jailed their father and became the sixth and last great Mughal. This biography investigates the life and intellectual project of Dara Shukoh. It balances an analysis of the prince's writings with the complex cultural, social and political context of his times.
