- Sāmarrāʼ (Iraq) -- Islamic architecture -- Cities and towns, Medieval -- History
This work attempts to understand Islamic urbanism and court life from an interdisciplinary approach. It examines Samarra, the last great example of early Islamic city building in Iraq, the capital of the Abbasid caliphate and the centre of court culture during the second half of the ninth century.

- Islamic architecture -- Decoration and ornament -- Middle East
The transformation of Islamic architecture and ornament during the eleventh and twelfth centuries signaled profound cultural changes in the Islamic world. Yasser Tabbaa explores with exemplary lucidity the geometric techniques that facilitated this transformation, and investigates the cultural processes by which meaning was produced within the new forms. Iran, Iraq, and Syria saw the development of proportional calligraphy, vegetal and geometric arabesque, muqarnas (stalactite) vaulting, and other devices that became defining features of medieval Islamic architecture.
Ultimately, the forms and themes described in this book shaped the development of Mamluk architecture in Egypt and Syria, and by extension, the entire course of North African and Andalusian architecture as well.

The general conditions under which Christians were entitled to protection from their Muslim rulers were laid dawn in the convenant of 'Umar. But the Muslim attitude gradually changed, and this study trace clearly and in detail the fluctuation from lenience to severity, from indulgence to persecution, and the way in which non-Muslim were affected by the growing restrictions imposed on them.

- Middle East -- Foreign relations -- Japan
Iranian and Ottoman travelers to Japan in the late nineteenth century found a model to admire — a culture that was beginning to take its place in the modern world without sacrificing its traditional culture. Their admiration was bolstered when Japan sunk the Russian Baltic fleet in 1905. This victory was celebrated across the Middle East, and dispelled the traditional colonial discourse of European supremacy. No longer, Japan had proven, did modernization demand Westernization.
This collection provides fresh insight into the cross-cultural exchange between “the Crescent” and “the Rising Sun” in a rapidly changing world. The authors explore the encounters between these two separate, but fatefully linked cultures and the ensuing reciprocal influences in developing “Eastern modernity” against a looming backdrop of Western imperial domination.

The Making of the Avicennan Tradition: The Transmission, Contents, and Structure of Ibn Sīnā's Al-Mubāḥat̲āt (the Discussions)/ David Colum Reisman
Presenting a detailed analysis of the manuscripts, contents, structure and historical transmission of The Discussions, this volume is a collection of correspondence written by eleventh-century philosoher Avicenna, his students and colleagues.
The first chapter contains a study of the extant manuscripts complete with palaeographical and codicological details. The second chapter traces the transmission of the texts that now constitute The Discussions and offers convincing arguments for their posthumous collection. The third chapter presents biographical studies of Avicenna's students Bahmanyar and Ibn Zayla, and his colleague Abū l-Qāsim al-Kirmānī, in order to develop the historical and intellectual contexts of these philosophical discussions. The fourth chapter develops theories for the dating and original sequence of the individual letters on the basis of textual evidence.

Drawing on a wealth of sources from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this book is the first comprehensive account of the dynamic relationship between ruling authority and its urban subjects in an era that until recently was seen as one of only decline. By placing ordinary people at the centre of its narrative, this wide-ranging work offers fresh perspectives on imperial sovereignty, on the rise of an urban culture of political satire, and on the place of the practices of faith in the work of everyday politics.
* Provides the first comprehensive account of the relationship between the ruling authority and urban subjects in Mughal Delhi
* Challenges the narrative of imperial decline and places ordinary people at the center of the story
* Offers fresh perspectives on imperial soveriegnty and urban culture in the capital of the Mughal empire

When first published in 1926 this book aroused much controversy. The theory expounded in the book was that Islamic sources in general, and the writings of Ibn al-`Arabi in particular, formed the basis of Dante’s poem Divine Comedy, the poem which symbolised the whole culture of medieval Christianity. The book shows how fundamental Muslim legends of the nocturnal journey and of the ascension of the Prophet Muhammed appear in Dante’s writings.

- Illumination of books and manuscripts, Iranian -- Themes, motives -- Technique
The work aims at bringing the Persian texts into the study of the arts and technology of the Indo-lranian world – an approach much neglected so far. Drawing upon Persian sources (both from Iran and India), viz., technical treatises, historical chronicles and poetical texts, the work deals with painting and the art of book making during twelfth to nineteenth century. The introduction presents the geographical and chronological dimensions of the study. After a brief history of Persian painting before the twelfth century, the book discusses mural painting, manuscripts, origin of paper and its fabrication, the composition of the page, colours/pigments used in the paintings, painting subjects, bookbinding, etc. The painter, man and artist, his origin, his training, his status, aesthetics and taste, his workshop and its organisation and distribution of tasks therein, modular construction of the manuscripts, library, the caligraphy surrounding the painting, its illuminations and binding are all analysed. In fact the book reconstructs the entire process of making an illustrated manuscript from its ground work to its binding. Persian text and illustrations enhance the utility of the work.

Islam in characterised by a number of inner dualities and oppositions of practice and belief. In its attempt to squash the influence of animism and pantheism or polytheism and to promote the idea of the One and Only Absolute, God, Islam has come up against a tendency within itself to incorporate certain local religious traditions and practices. Islamic Prayer shares this combination of universality and local particularity. This book explores this paradox and the contradictory tendencies contained in it.

The book is a study and translation of Razosan’ an ‘ Uzbek oral epic., For
many centuries marvelous tales and songs sprouted up around the figure of Koroglu
outside modern Turkey, to a lesser extent in the Caucasus than in Central Asia. As
late as in the 20th century they were and still are recorded mainly by folklorists in various idioms, as dictated by rhapsodists. However, it is not clear how these compositions, which were sung or recited, were interdependent with one another in their origin.

(Excerpt from the book) The following biographical sketches of some of the principal characters in Central Asia affairs were written with the object of throwing a little more light than we already possess upon a subject to which we too often permit ourselves to show indifference. They are based upon such information as can be gleaned from all authentic books of travel, histories, official documents...

Translation of Relaciones de Don Juan de Persia
First published in 1926. Don Juan was a Persian Moslem who became a Spanish Roman Catholic. His description of Persia and his account of the wars waged by the Persians during the sixteenth century considerably add to modern day knowledge of the history of the period. The book describes the Safavi rule as first established, and the system of government set up in the prime of Sháh 'Abbás, as well as being an account of the long journey from Isfahán to Valladolid. Guy Le Strange's comprehensive introduction places the book in its historical context, as well as providing important information.
